Van problems continue.

The folks that changed the engine routed the AC Clutch wires across the fan belt and so that tore up the wires. 150.00 for another company to fix that.  Then the transmission failed due to lack of fluid but we had the engine swap folks power flush it a few miles before. We just managed to limp into the transmission shop.

Now 1300.00 and a re conditioned tranny and the brakes are weird. The peddle does not return like is should.  Off to "Just Brakes"  Change the brake fluid and bleed and adjust the brakes and you  should be ok they said.  $130.00 and no change~!  Now they say maybe the brake booster???  They don't know and they just do brakes omg~!  Lot of stupid going around.

The engine and tranny seem ok now. Need to have the Tranny checked when 500 miles rolls around. We don't drive it that much so might take a while.  Weather is getting nice for camping now though if we stay in AAA towing range~!

We have some favorite spots to stop and shoot the sunset.
The old engine is waiting in the garage for Charles Roggeveen

Wednesday, September 9, 2015

The Engine is in and running and we are taking the van on Shakedown runs each evening. Still some bugs to work out and one is ants in the engine compartment~! Seems it was parked over an ant colony while they were working on it so we have a nest to deal with. Spray seems the best at the moment and most have now passed on. AC cost 150.00 to evacuate and recharge and lasted two days so think there is a leak and will have to pay more money to fix :-(

Pat and I take it out most evenings after work to shoot sunsets.

Ace enjoys the outings with us.

This is the engine from the Camper Van that seized. I will take it home to play with and try to find out what happened and maybe rebuild it as a project. The doner engine is almost ready to install now and maybe we will be mobile this week?  Some shakedown driving of course to be sure all is ok after the major surgery~!

We miss the van and our nomad life on the road.

Friday, August 21, 2015

As the Mercury is now uncomfortable on my back for more than 45 minutes, we looked at some SUV's and found this nice 2006 Rinkon (Use Asian accent)  Nice comfortable seats and nice vehicle for 9000 dollars but found they have mechanical problems and think best to spend money on the van instead and drive it more.  Pat needs to learn to drive the van but the turning radius is something that most women don't understand. Click the arrow to see the video.

Charles Roggeven can you see the heads just shampooed?  Waddaya tink? Will dey werk?

The Heads are refurbished and back at the shop for install on the engine. We will take the intake manifold and carburetor off the camper and use it on the donor engine. Will try to determine why the engine failed on our trip. Suspect it had something to do with the last repair job at Ice Cold Air.

Will check on the van tomorrow to see how the work is progressing.

Bought a Used Engine Stand today
 90 dollars on Craigslist

The Donor Engine will need some work. Will have the heads done and a new timing chain and got a gasket kit today too.

Dirty Beast to clean up.  What colour to paint?

Wednesday, August 12, 2015

Both Vans at the Shop Now.

Had to tow the Camper there of course.

The Donor with Engine Ready to Pull.

I will drive up and check progress today. Hope to get a pressure washer and clean up the camper engine bay and the new engine... maybe some paint too.

Blackie the Donor Van

The New Black Van is an engine and transmission Donor only. Its an '87 like our camper and the engine runs strong and the transmission was just rebuilt so we will pull both together for the transplant. "Blackie" is noisy as it's running a dual header exhaust and it might be hot rodded a bit.  We will find out more as we progress. Right now rains and flooding have put a halt on moving both of them.  I will probably pull and recon the heads while its out. We did a wet/dry compression test and one cylinder is leaking some on both tests so we think a valve not seating properly.

The van was used by a couple to go fishing.. Many things do not work so it it will be discarded after removing the good bits. Tires look good but I have new ones on the camper. Will pull some parts to use as spares before the goes to the junkyard. A place nearby has given me a quote of 1300.00 to do the transplant and other things will be  on top of that.

If the photo does not show full view you can click on it, to see.

Bought an '87 Ram B250 - new Thumb Drive 8Gb

Bought an '87 Ram B250 and will steal the engine and tranny for the disabled beast. Now looking for a reliable place to make the swap.  One nearby quoted 1300.00 for the swap. Compression is good, wet and dry and the tranny is a new recon.  Engine runs strong but loud as someone put headers on it. Lets see how it goes.

We bought a new Thumb Drive 8Gb from China for 4.00 including shipping~! What do you think??

Pat and I were on board the US Army LCU Matamoros regarding repairs to the Intellian Satellite System and found our own Naval Antenna System working well. Pat doesn't get on the ships much to see how our equipment is used so its interesting for her. The crew were very kind to us and we helped them plan for the repairs.

The VAN Mechanic failed to show up for the Second Day :-(

Now the engine will not turn over again.

New Oil and Filter and Only turned over a few times with Plugs Removed

Depressing. It turned a few times and then stopped.

This is what it looks like under the van. You really wanted to know didn't you~!

The oil pan will be difficult to remove to get at the oil pump grrrrr.

Worse news, now it wont turn over even with the plugs out and a fresh charge on the battery.  Would love to pull the oil pan and pump and see how they are and the sludge in the pan, etc., but its almost impossible with out putting the beast on a hoist and not many can take it as its 9.5 ft high with the high-top and the AC on top of that.  Might try a bar and see if we can turn it by hand some more.
Still trying to find an honest garage and getting more cynical each passing day.

------------------

Flushing the Oil and Checking the Oil Filter.

Here is the filter. Some of the filings due to cutting it open. Need to be more careful when doing this.

We will put new oil in with a flush fluid and new filter and see if we can start the engine.  If yes then we will let it run for a while and change oil and filter again and open the filter more carefully this time... Wonder if there is a pipe cutter big enough?? Need to find a way to open it without creating metal filings that just confuse the issue.  What happens after that is anyone's guess.

Trying to Break the Engine Free

Cousin Charles Roggeveen suggested we try and free the engine by pulling the plugs and spraying mystery oil in the cylinders and leave it for a day.  We will do that and then spray in some fine penetrating oil for another day and then try to turn the engine with a breaker bar.  Thanks for the idea Chucky~!

Pulled the plugs and squirted in the penetrating oil and "blow in ye hole", the engine turns with no plugs~!  Now to change the oil.  Drain oil out of the oil filter and send it for analysis~!  The rest is too diluted with new oil to tell us much.  Maybe we will try to start it tomorrow??

Thank you Chucky~!

Next to figure out how we lost the oil in the first place~!

We will send the oil from the filter to Blackstone Laboratories for Analysis.

Another Van Repair Horror Story
Ice Cold Air W Hillsborough Ave.

COMPLAINT ACTIVITY REPORT Case # 67299794

Better Business Bureau Serving West Florida

Consumer Info: Duggan, Lyman Business Info: Ice Cold Air

Consumer's Original Complaint :

Ripped Off Boosting the problem. Not repaired. Lies. Van not running in a reliable fashion as it was before they worked on it.

I reported that the aircon doors were not being activated properly and the cruise control was not working and added that as it was an old van there was probably a bad plastic vacuum hose or vacuum motor bad.

They called a week later and said the intake manifold was "not holding a vacuum" Actually there is only a vacuum when the motor is running but they insisted that the intake manifold gasket must be changed.

Three weeks later, after I called for status reports several times they said the intake manifold was full of carbon and dirt and needed to be replaced. I went up to have a look and they had pried the splash plate up to see the carbon inside. I knew this was normal and complained and took the manifold to have it hot tanked and cleaned. Napa cleaned it and put the deflector back in new condition for 40.00 which is very good and it looked like new again. It took two months for Ice Cold to finish and they called me. I asked if they tookit for a test drive and the manager said yes and the ac doors and cruise control working fine....

Lie~!

I took the van for a drive. Cruise control and speedo not working. I found the speedo cable had not been put back on so I put it on myself. So I know there was not test drive to confirm it was working. AC doors still not working when changing from floor to regular AC to defrost.

Another Lie!

The idle is now a bit rough... perhaps from the new manifold gasket as the advance was set up with a small vacuum leak.

The bill  820.00 for nothing. This used to be a good shop when  Gary Reisner was running it but now all employees are changed so its a new operation but the same owner who has another Ice Cold Air on South Dale Mabry.

Got a follow up call from a lady asking how the service was. I told her as above and she said the owner would call and talk to me. Lady owner apparently. Never received a call now 3 weeks later. Needless to say I can't go back there again and I advise all to stay away from both of these shops.

Consumer's Desired Resolution:

Refund and bring my van back to the original condition. And pay my insurance for the two months they kept the vehicle and up until the van in reliable driving condition.

Our search for the Honest Mechanic

I found a place in Hudson, about 45 minutes away that was recommended. Pat and I called the guy and went out to meet him and take him to lunch. There were no vehicles under repair, but some restoration projects were sitting there. There was a small upholstery business on the premises and Gary  McArthy, the owner was showing a new guy the ropes.  We went to lunch and he talked the good talk and he discovered I was a Mason. He was too so he said. Later back at the shop he gave me a computer generated estimate of all the costs.  Its the same program all the garages use with their labour rate factored in.
Later I emailed him to ask the source of the reconditioned engine and the terms of warranty and I did not received a reply so I phoned him and left a msg on his machine, no return call... Three more messages over the next 3 days and still no response so another email and still no response.  I went on line and did some research and here is what I found from the Better Business Bureau.
Feb. 19, 2015 I took my Mercedes to fix a shifting problem, Gary said 1 week. I called for 8 weeks and it was still not done , so I drove there in person and found my car was smashed in the front, he admitted he drove it into something, but when I look at mileage it had 200 miles extra on it, he said if I didn't like it he would give me car back and say it was that way when i got it, so another month went buy and he never fixed my shifting problem and charged me $800 dollars , and did a very bad job fixing body and paint he said what did you expect for free, bottom line my car was mint know it worth thousand less. This gut is bad news - See more at: bbb.org/west-florida/bus…
This report on Yelp!
Many people believe that auto repair shops have always more often than not, have had a stigma for being less than honest. Gary Mccarthy at New Wave Cycles is no exception to the rule.

My experience with Gary Mccarthy led me to notify The Pasco County Sheriff's Office, the Department of Agriculture's Consumer Services, and a consumer attorney. My lawyer was able to obtain records revealing the owner of New Wave Cycles had placed three liens on his customers' titles, in order to confiscate and possess their cars for "unable to pay for repairs".

Three customers within 40 days. (November/ December 2012 - 2013)

In my case, in October Gary replaced a radiator for me for $652.64. The vehicle has been overheating and leaking coolant ever since his initial repair. After going through two more of Gary's radiators he advised me for $89.00 he could diagnose more extensively in order to keep my vehicle from experiencing more expensive damages. I agreed to the $89.00. My very next conversation with Gary Mccarthy revealed that I owed him $1,400 to get the car back repaired and $750.00 to get it back un-repaired, un-fixed with engine parts in the rear of my hatch back, for parts he ordered and work that was currently being done. I never approved, authorized, or signed any paperwork. I only agreed to a $89.00 diagnostic. Then, I had to call New Wave Cycles to find out the result. Gary Mccarthy never called me back to let me know what he allegedly found. He just began "fixing my car". $1,400 worth apparently.

Before using New Wave Cycle please be aware of the Auto Repair Act. Dishonest mechanics rely on the fact that their customers are not aware of their rights and do not realize mechanics are held to a high standard by the state of Florida.

His overt violations are being looked into at this time, as my case is still pending. The sale of my vehicle will happen on his property in March 2013 unless or until the intervention takes place.

Gary Mccarthy's  incompetence in my original repair can only be matched by his dishonesty. New Wave Cycles has possibly found a way to make supplemental income in a down economy. Go outside the original estimate, over inflate the cost of repair, then seize the title, in order to own the car, due to customer not able to pay.

Karma is the cycle of moral cause and affect.

What's going on with the van?  Do you have it fixed?

The  question is the same from everyone. Not an easy decision as everyone wants our money and promises the world to get it. I have been down that road before and have been burned. Colour me Cynic~!

-Where to get the engine, and who reconditioned it, and what is the warranty.

-Who will replace it and can they do a good job.

The smooth talker at the counter will promise all but it's the grease monkeys in the back who do the work.  A lot are irresponsible and on booze or drugs and the turn over in monkeys is big time here in Tampa.

The van has been sitting there while I try to figure out what to do about the situation. A reconditioned engine seems to be the only solution. As the engine is seized up there must be considerable damage inside from the overheating. It appears that loss of oil was the cause of the damage and the reason for loss of oil may never be known. Catastrophic Damage is the term~!

A reconditioned long-block 318 Vin T engine costs about 2000.00 plus shipping and installation charges. It makes one think of a newer van, but, this one is outfitted the way we like for our kind of travel. A newer van would be nice in many ways but the work to convert it to our way will not be easy or cheap. We could possibly use the pop top and most of the interior from our old van.  That is one of the "me thinks" I am looking at now.

Although I have upgraded the '87 in many ways through the years, many do not want to work on older vehicles these days and parts are becoming a problem.

I visited 3 shops regarding the engine swap and will make a decision soon.  It will be a reconditioned long block with a 3 year warranty. Total cost of the engine and swap will be more than 3000 bucks which is a lot of money to throw at an old vehicle but I don't see any alternatives.  I have spent more than 5000 on upgrades since I bought it 10 years ago making it safe and reliable.

Soon I will have a new van omg. This photo from 2006

Engine Seized: Trip on Hold.

About 20 miles south of Gainesville I noticed a tapping noise and the manifold pressure was tapping with it. ( I installed a manifold pressure gauge some time ago)  I also noticed the low pressure oil idiot light was trembling. Temperature gauge appeared normal as did all other gauges. I slowed down to 25 mph with flashers on and pulled into a rest area about 3 miles further on I-275. Popped the engine hood and it was obvious there was an overheating problem. Checked oil and it showed empty. Added a half gallon and tried to start the van. It was not going to turn over and any more trying would smoke the starting battery so I called AAA. 2 hours later on 4th July we were being towed home.  Looks like the engine has seized up.  Oil had been checked the day before and was down a pint and it was  topped up???

Trip on hold needless to say. It looks like an expensive repair.  We had just spend over $1000.00 to replace the complete air conditioning system so we are disappointed to say the least but happy to be back in full AC and our wonderful bed.

Tomorrow is the Departure Day

We take Ace to the vet and then Breakfast and head north at an easy pace. Don't know where we will stop for the night but we are in no hurry. Destination Helen Georgia and will hang there for a few days.

Rob put a second SSD hard drive in my laptop which speeds things up omg~!

From Time to Time we will be able to send a Glympse and you can then follow us on Google Maps Just by clicking on the Glympse link.  It eats our battery and data as it sends Google our GPS position as we move.  It is highly accurate and even gives our speed. We set it to expire after a few hours... usually 3 but I think you can see our vapor trail~!

You can follow us on Twitter too~!  https://twitter.com/lymanduggan

We will also be playing with Periscope which will give full time video as we roll down the road and you can text us while we are driving if you are on Periscope at the same time.

Pat made this 2 minute video a few weeks ago and put it on YouTube for you.

Ace is Coming with Us~!

Ace, son of Grace will be coming with us and his Mom. This is a photo of him not too long after eyes opened 1 April. He has grown much since then and is really showing his intelligence now. He understands a lot of words and does tricks for us.  I need to list them.  He is now almost the size of his mother and he is a sweet puppy and very curious about everything.

Here 41 days old photo, quite handsome, eh~!

Be careful Ace, those Thai peppers are used as Rocket Fuel~!

We took Ace for his first Swim two weeks ago and put the event on YouTube
Click on the above link to see it.

Next video, Grace jumps for a toy in SloMo while puppy looks on.

Checking an Oil Leak

Oil Leak showing on the driveway OMG WTF

Local garage told us the oil pan gasket but had that changed last year. We greased Rob up and slid him under the van with a rope around his neck so we could pull him out later~! He found the leak coming from the distributer and changed the gasket. Leekie gonnie~!

Getting the van ready for Canada

June 2015 Here it is~! Hi Everyone~!

Trying to get the van ready for the Road Trip to Canada.
The van is not co-operating but we continue to throw money at it~!

Now its the AC so I have decided to replace the complete system, every hose and part there is including the compressor. It has a leak somewhere and when we replace one bit another fails so hope we will have a new system mid week.

28 June 2015 and Still learning Blogger~!  Hope we can start moving north today~!

Afternoon and most packing done.. still some AC problems. A resettable fuse for the AC fan keeps cycling so its being replaced as well as the fuse holder as it looks in poor shape. Hope that fixes.. some other problems showing now :-(  Still hope to get away today.

30 June  Still in Tampa.  New departure target 4 July. Hope to spend 2nd night in Helen Georgia and stay in that area a few days. Cool at night in the mountains.

We have an IP Internet Camera in the van so we can watch what is going on while we are out shopping or in a restaurant... we can see the pups etc and as all windows left open it is our security system too. Pups always have water and 14 windows open + roof vent with fan running. We worry about them a lot so never far away and always monitoring video and sound on our phones. The camera has pan/tilt/zoom which we can control from our smart phones (Galaxy S4) and we can listen in also. We both always have a bluetooth device in our ear. We keep business contacts even while driving this way but may tell business calls that we will call them back.

We can take photos from the IP cam with our phone too.  Here is a sample.

The camera is portable and we can move it anywhere needed.. even outside.
